Slag Heap Projects acknowledges the Wilyakali and Barkindji people, the traditional custodians of the lands, waters and skies within which our gallery and programs operate. We recognise that connection to culture and community is strong, and sovereignty has never been ceded.

Through our gallery and off-site programs, Slag Heap Projects’ advocates for Far West NSW artists by facilitating experimentation, place-based research and commercial engagement. Slag Heap Projects wants to understand increasingly complex cultural frictions by creating a space where art is a tool for inquiry.

Marnpi Festival: Anthony Hayward

Catalogue

Anthony Hayward is a proud Ngiyampaa man who was raised in Broken Hill NSW, and is now based in Cairns QLD. Anthony’s family are descendents from the Ngiyampaa tribe of western NSW, although Anthony has lived in Broken Hill all his life on Wilyakali and Barkindji Country. Anthony is the owner of Mulundjii Carvings, a small business inspired by his grandfather and other elders from Wilcannia NSW. Anthony mostly carves local mulga wood and river redgum from the Baaka-Darling River and Nelia wood, which is a tree that is part of his tribal totemic system. Anthony carves traditional Aboriginal artefacts such as boomerangs, claps sticks and nulla-nulla’s as well as sculptural pieces that reflect his home Country. His work has been exhibited at the Broken Hill City Art Gallery, Slag Heap Projects, the Broken Hill Art Exchange and he has been part of collaborative community projects presented at the Art Gallery of NSW. He has held various positions across the mental health, arts and community development sector. For more information about Anthony’s work, read Krystle Evans’ introduction to Marnpi Festival.
