Slag Heap Projects operates out of 217 Oxide Street, Broken Hill NSW, Wilyakali Country.
Broken Hill is part of the broader Far West NSW region, in relative proximity to Menidee and Wilcannia, a region that spans diverse Aboriginal language groups: Barkindji (Paakantyi); Wilyakali; Malyangapa; Dieri; Ngiyampaa; Karengappa; Pantyikali; Wadakali; Wongkumara; and Wanyiwaku. 
We are 836km from  Naarm-Melbourne, 1,151km from Eora-Sydney, 517km from Tarntanya-Adelaide, and 1,639km from Mparntwe-Alice Springs.&#38;nbsp;

and continue to benefit the lives of artists.Slag heap is literally a by-product of smelting ores and recycled
metals. As a presence in the town of Broken Hill, the slag heap separates north
and south. Slag Heap Projects is committed to
understanding complexity. On a local, national and global scale, we have seen
the damage caused when complexity is weaponised. Slag Heap Projects attempts to
create safe spaces and places to facilitate cross-community dialogue through
creative output.

Workshop: Introduction to Oil Painting &#38;amp; Arts Practice with Zev Tropp


Saturday, 31 August 202411am-3pm Join us for a fun and engaging introduction to oil painting and artistic practice with artist Zev Tropp. This two-day workshop will explore various techniques, including colour mixing, preparing grounds, solvent burning, and other essential methods. Alongside these technical skills, we'll discuss different approaches to painting, focusing on materiality, technique, and concept. The workshop is designed to be informal and accessible, with no prior skills, education, or experience required!This workshop is funded by West Darling Arts. 

This workshop is $25 and includes all materials. Register to secure your spot.  
About Zev:
Zev Tropp is a contemporary artist and arts worker who has worked across small-to-medium arts organisations and galleries. Most recently, he worked as a producer in Public Programming at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, co-directed the ARI 'Small Time Studio' in Mullumbimby and has worked in adult education running workshops in painting and contemporary arts practice. In 2019, he exhibited the solo show New Colour Futurism at Green Monday Studio and curated the Bushfire fundraiser&#38;nbsp;Art From The Heart&#38;nbsp;at Block Projects in 2020. He was a recent finalist in the Hazelhurst Works On Paper prize in 2022 and has recently shown at PROP Gallery&#38;nbsp;No Lies Here&#38;nbsp;and the City Of Sydney -&#38;nbsp;Public Hoardings Project&#38;nbsp;in 2023 and Airspace Projects with Chloe Abdel-Nour -&#38;nbsp;GLIMMERS&#38;nbsp;in 2024. Zev previously produced and ran inclusive Hip Hop nights in Melbourne and has been teaching Yoga/Meditation. Zev is of Jewish-Indian heritage, and studied at RMIT and Victorian College of the Arts, completing his honours in Fine Art in 2019. Zev’s art practice and interests are centred around an engagement with marginalised voices, identities and politics.

Spin Cycle&#38;nbsp;

Slag Heap Projects launched its 2024 program with a prompt, a washing machine performing its final cycle set against the Alan Whicker’s 1970 documentary detailing the totalising grip of the Barrier Industrial Union over the isolated outback town of Broken Hill: ‘The Walled City’. This performance was&#38;nbsp; first step in a process of consultation and collaboration for our inaugral 2024 exhibition, under&#124;visible,&#38;nbsp;which has asked artists to make work around our namesake, and the town’s most recognisable landmark the slag heap (or line of lode).

Slag Heap Projects x The Old Vic


Photographic printing workshop with rock pigments 10am - 1pm, 17th March 2024&#38;nbsp;

Slag Heap Projects partnered with our neighbours The Old Vic to host a demonstration and workshop of Graeme Armstrong’s new photographic printing process, using rock pigments. 

 Graeme who has been developing new 'carbon' transfer printing processes using Broken Hill minerals as pigment instead of the traditional black ink/dye. He demonstrated the process, and we got ot experience his self-made rock pigment treadmill crusher. You’ll be invited to supply a photograph to develop your own rock pigment image. 

Graeme’s research and development has been supported by the Broken Hill City Art Gallery as part of the 2023/2024 Open Cut Commission.

Join us for a night celebrating the cuisine of Palestine. This night of solidarity will raise funds for Action Aid and The Sameer Project's essential work in Gaza. The night will include a shared meal cooked by Oli and Kirsten, a silent auction of objects and offerings and a looped screening of Introduction to the End of an Argument (1990) directed by Elia Suleiman &#38;amp; Jayce Salloum.
Tickets are sold at a sliding scale. Anything above $30 will increase your donation to the chosen organisations. Please choose the ticket price that suits you.

Walks

Walking is at the centre of Slag Heap Projects, as a methdology for generating collective knowledge between artists and non-artists. This is an ongoing series, which began with walks at Imperial Lakes and up the Slag Heap in March 2024.&#38;nbsp;

We walked Imperial Lakes with ranger, Dave Elston and&#38;nbsp;Barrier Field Naturalists’ President Semitj Hopcraft to learn about how Broken Hill Landcare have approached conservation within a historical mining site.This was the second of a series of walks for 2024, as we prepare for our first show of 2024, under&#124;visible, opening in April.

A night walk up the Slag Heap
7:30pm, 14 March 2024
We were joined by 20 women and non-binary folk for a walk up the slag heap. As the beginning of community research for our first exhibition of 2024, under&#124;visible, this night walk asked the community to simply be next to and notice the slag heap’s presence as both site and metaphor. By torch light, we walked in groups and alone exploring the particular architecture, geology and cultural landscape of this site. &#38;nbsp;

Krystle Evans is an Aboriginal artist with familial ties to the Far Western region of New South Wales, where she lives and works. Her contemporary Aboriginal works—confessional and feminist in nature—are painted, sewn, and adorned with found objects and diaristic text fragments. Krystle’s practice bridges traditional Aboriginal storytelling with contemporary themes to create new narratives. Her cross-disciplinary approach, recently foregrounding textiles, explores themes of self and the human experience through both a feminist and deeply personal cultural lens.
From the quiet intimacy of her home, Krystle slowly hand-pierces countless holes to darn stories into forgotten fabrics, imbuing each piece with new meaning. Lovingly and laboriously crafted, her practice honours the art of sewing and contributes to the canon of Aboriginal art. By re-examining and reworking materials—reclaimed household linen, discarded fabrics, and found threads —Evans’ work pays homage to the strength of femininity and matriarchy.

Evans’ latest series presents an intimate tapestry of reimagined creation stories. Always playful and sometimes contentious, her new body of work is a thoughtful exploration of home and cultural practice. Through soft sculptural forms, disarmingly childlike yet deeply considered, Krystle invites audiences into her inner world situated within broader cultural narratives, prompting reflection on the layered nature of storytelling.

About
Slag Heap Projects was born out of conversations and field
trips on Wilyakali and Barkindji Country. Footprints left in creeks beds are
often the only record of these discussions. Following mulga parrots and
waterways brought together artists Asma d Mather and Verity Nunan, and curator
Hester Lyon to form a new artist-run initiative in Broken Hill. The methodology
of walking is at the core of Slag Heap Projects as a way to understand, embody
and generate histories of place as settler-colonialists on unceded lands and
waterways.

As people from away, Verity, Asma and Hester are committed to the
people and ideas of Far West NSW. We recognise the importance of capturing the
in-between and subtle moments of exchange that already happen informally and
prolifically between artists in our communities. Slag Heap Projects gives form
to ephemeral conversations.

Slag Heap Projects emerges within the socio-geo-political
complexity of Far West NSW. The Slag Heap itself is a contested site and becomes
a metaphor at the centre of this project. Slag Heap Projects responds to a desire from our direct
community to have a space that provides professional development, vital
curatorial support, sustainable financial models and cross-community dialogue.

	People


Hester LyonFounding co-DirectorHester Lyon is a curator, writer, and arts educator based on Wilyakali Country in Broken Hill. Through practices of walking and conversation on Country, Hester establishes ways of working in relationship to the specificities of regional ecology and politics. Her practice inhabits a methodology of dis-organising &#38;amp; collectivisation to explore alternative organisational models that foster agency of community &#38;amp; place. Hester founded Chloride St Studios with a collective of artists based in Broken Hill, a studio hub for local artists, hosting community and art events. She was previously Curator at Broken Hill City Art Gallery and has worked at a number of artist-run, public and private arts organisations in Naarm-Melbourne.
 
Asma d. Mather 
Founding co-DirectorAsma Mather’s practice seeks to map a space between the tangible/intangible, geography/metaphysics, sign/signified, through drawing, printmaking and 2D installation. Systems of interpretation are examined and distilled with an emphasis on essence, synthesis and traditional knowledge; its capacity to understand transformation, balance and the language of Nature. In her 2020 exhibition - barzakh; silence and the symphony - at the Broken Hill City Art Gallery, she researched the writings of Sufi metaphysician Ibn al-‘Arabi and his discussion of an intermediate zone as a meeting place for opposites and complementaries. Asma is an artist and educator who has exhibited widely.
 Verity NunanFounding co-Director
Verity Nunan is a research-based artist, completing her PhD at Griffith University. She uses a walking-based methodology to explore architectural and artistic place inquiry. Mapping people’s relationship to space and place is the interface of this investigation and negotiating the degree of publicness is a central theme. Her research has been recently published in the Journal of Public Space (2018). Inspiring passion for community engagement, Verity co-founded the not-for-profit community organisation Bruns Brekkie (2018). Her work has been exhibited across Australia, most recently at Lismore Regional Art Gallery (2021) and Broken Hill City Art Gallery (2023).
